Getting super clear on what you want

Updated: Sep 17, 2019

If you don’t know where you're going any road will take you there - George Harrison. We have all heard a quote similar to this one at some point, because it’s very true. Before we embark on any journey we need to know what our end destination looks like. Our end destination will give us clarity on the decisions we make in the present moment and will determine whether our current and future actions are serving us or not.

So many people have no idea of what they want in life. Quite often people get so caught up in life, work, family and being busy with “stuff” that they forget about themselves, and become very disconnected to their own wants and needs. I talk to a lot of people about what they want and when I ask them the question “So what do you want in life? Or What does success looks like to you?” They quite often have a blank look on their face, then start thinking, and quite often the answer is “i don’t know, its been so long since I’ve thought about that” or if they do have a bit of an idea, most of the time this is very vague and can’t be explained very clearly.

When people think about what they want, most of the time they put huge limits on what they can achieve, maybe they have never been where they want to be before and don’t think it's possible. In my experience it can be really scary to think about what you really want, most of the time its outside your comfort zone and that’s when all the voices creep in “I can’t do that, I’m not good enough to make that happen, what if I fail?” You know the ones… sometimes there’s also the worries of knowing if you really go for what you want some people aren’t going to approve of it, it could also put a lot of attention on you, put you in the spotlight? what if you succeed? I know personally for me getting clarity on what I want has been hard at times for multiple reasons - having tried many times before and failed, I didn’t want to fail again so would limit myself, but also actually achieving success and standing out has scared me too.

Even when all the voices come in and try to steer you away from what you really want, I encourage you to push them to the side for now and actually really dive into what success looks like to you? what does it really look like? (we can look into all the voices / doubts in a future blog). I typically work with people towards success with their health, sometimes this branches into other areas also. When you dive into this, think about your values, what are your highest values? Mine are my health, finances and relationships.

One thing I notice very often is people tend to over value their finances and undervalue their health. Obviously we need money but what good is all the money in the world if we don’t have good health to make the most of it! Once you are clear on these the next step is to map out what you ultimately want each of these to look like, where your priorities lie and where you need to start focussing more energy. I encourage you to go into real depth with these (so you can clearly see, feel and embody what you want these to look like for you), however we will focus on your health for now.

These are the kind of questions you should ask yourself:

What does success look like for you? Whats your health look like? Whats your ideal weight? How do you want to feel? How do you want to perform? Do you want to be stronger? Do you want more energy? What does good energy feel like for you? What are your relationships like? What kind of connection do you experience with those that are close to you? How do you want to show up everyday in your life? What habits do you need to create? How will you spend your time?

What we want can be broken into different time frames. With our health I think I t’s important to have a long term vision that can be broken down into smaller steps, maybe a 3 year vision, a 1 year vision and then also 3 month goals. These time frames can obviously be individual as each person is an individual and depending on how you function best you may even need to break this down into smaller goals/visions like monthly and weekly targets.

If you would like to get super clear on what you want and then have the support to actually go after it and make it your reality then reach out and let's see if we could be the right fit to help in your success.
